The goal was to produce an ideal force curve every stroke. Split times, or the number of meters-per-stroke, or the number of strokes-per-minute — anything like that I refused to take notice of. My sole goal was to see the Performance Monitor display an ideal force curve. Of course at the slightest hint of pain I eased up and went slower.

Sitting upright, rowing only to my strong point, maintaining the natural shaped curve of my spine, staying inside Dr. Dubousset’s cone of economy, finishing the slide before driving off the stretcher — these appear to be the things that produce an ideal force curve.

I write appear because somewhere I remember having read that an ideal force curve is not necessarily evidence of good technique.
