Again the goal was to produce an ideal force curve every stroke. I also concentrated on two things at the catch — (1) maintaining the natural shaped curve of the spine and (2) bringing the heels closer to the seat.

How do you put the pelvis into a neutral position?

I’ll begin by paraphrasing Steve Fairbairn. I always used to coach: concentrate on that part of the back where the tailbone ends, [and take] the weight about six inches up the back.

Whenever I bring my heels closer to the seat it forces me to concentrate on that part of my back where the tailbone ends — that is, to lift myself up from my tailbone.

So I wonder if bringing the heels closer to the seat isn’t the way to put the pelvis into a neutral position. It certainly forces me to concentrate on that part of the back where the tailbone ends, and to stop slouching, and to find the natural shaped curve of my spine. And I believe my back is healthier for all this.
