Again focusing on Steve Fairbairn's admonition to "shorten up to row long" — which means not rowing past your strong point while preserving a neutral spine throughout the entire stroke.
The catch continues to be biggest challenge. It is where I find myself still fighting the inclination to overreach and row past my strong point, and where I frequently have to readjust by making sure that I have shrugged the shoulders up, pulled them back, and dropped them down, while lifting my chest up, and that I had not allowed myself to exaggerate any of these movements.
I am coaching myself to arrive at my strong point with the shoulder girdle in alignment with the pelvic girdle. This means coupling the shoulder girdle to the pelvic girdle to align the natural shaped curves of the spine. A neutral spine!
The goal is to preserve a neutral spine by keeping the shoulder girdle coupled to the pelvic girdle. Ultimately I want to drive off the stretcher with a neutral spine and sustain it all the way through the finish and back to the catch without thinking about it.
