To continue with yesterday’s experiment evaluating the relationship between back pain and drag factor (DF) I started with C2’s Damper set to ‘0’ (DF = 78). Twenty-five minutes later I changed it to DF = 85, and then to DF = 110, and finally to DF = 127, which is the DF that feels most like rowing on-water in my racing single.

I felt back pain at the start with the drag factor set at 85. Surprisingly the pain gradually lessened as I began raising the DF. The outcome is that I felt less back pain when the DF was set at 127 than I did when it was set at 85. The question is why? Is it because setting the DF at 127 is the most familiar? Or is 127 a DF that is particularly suited to rowing at low rates? For me it is undeniably easier to produce “a rectangular-shaped force curve, which shows peak force gotten earlier and sustained longer” with a drag factor set at 127 than it is with a drag factor set at 78.
