The Force Curve

The first time Charles Courtney saw a Force Curve he immediately recognized the significance of what he was looking at. This Force Curve taught me more “in fifteen minutes than I had learned in fifteen years.” -"The Sport of Rowing," Peter Mallory, p. 376

Charles Courtney’s epiphany about the significance of the Force Curve was foremost in my thoughts this afternoon. The Force Curve just sheds a uniquely bright light on a rower’s technique.

So again I practiced slow but focused movements while getting 10 meters-per-stroke and producing an efficient Force Curve — that is, a Force Curve that shows I started the drive off the stretcher with my legs, that there was no loss of power during the stroke, and that I sustained an Average Force somewhere between 60% to 70% of Peak Force.
