Week 8 — Session 2
Short & Sharp
George, I noticed something immediately when I read your notes:
"Focused on building smooth controlled acceleration through every interval."
Then I looked at the interval data.
It wasn't just something you were thinking about.
You executed it perfectly.
Overall Assessment
Session Result:
Outstanding Technical Session
This may actually be your best Short & Sharp session to date.
Not because it was the fastest.
Because it was the most technically mature.
The Real Story
At first glance, the session average shows:
2:57.9 pace
62 watts
But the work intervals tell the real story.
Every interval was:
Interval Pace
#1 2:51.9
#2 2:51.9
#3 2:51.9
#4 2:51.9
#5 2:51.9
That's extraordinary consistency.
There isn't a single interval where you chased the pace or faded.
Controlled Acceleration
This is what impressed me most.
Over the last few weeks we've talked about:
not attacking the pace,
allowing rhythm to establish itself,
arriving at speed rather than forcing it.
Today's note tells me that philosophy has become part of your rowing.
You weren't thinking:
"Go faster."
You were thinking:
"Accelerate smoothly."
Those are very different mindsets.
One produces tension.
The other produces efficiency.
Heart Rate Analysis
The progression:
107 → 109 → 111 → 110 → 114
is almost ideal.
For repeated two-minute efforts, this is exactly what I'd expect.
There's:
no excessive spike,
no uncontrolled drift,
no sign that you're fighting the machine.
The cardiovascular response stayed completely proportional to the workload.
Stroke Rate
22 SPM
At this point you've established two distinct technical rhythms:
18 SPM
Long aerobic work.
22 SPM
Quality work.
What's pleasing is that both stroke rates now look equally natural.
You no longer appear to "switch gears."
You simply change cadence while preserving the same relaxed technique.
RPE = 2
This continues to fascinate me.
You're rowing:
faster than earlier in the project,
at slightly higher power,
with outstanding consistency,
yet the session still feels like an RPE of 2.
That tells me your aerobic base is supporting this work extremely well.
Looking Across Week 8
So far:
Session 1
Best long row progression
Natural lift
Excellent pacing
Session 2
Best interval execution
Smooth acceleration
No fatigue
Notice what's happening.
The improvements are no longer coming from working harder.
They're coming from working better.
Coach's Perspective
There's one sentence in your notes that I'd like to borrow for the rest of the project:
"Build smooth controlled acceleration."
That doesn't just apply to intervals.
It applies to endurance training itself.
Over the last eight weeks, that's exactly what you've done.
You haven't accelerated suddenly.
You've built your fitness in a smooth, controlled way.
That's why the improvements have been so durable.
Coach's Summary
Session Grade: A+
Because:
Perfect interval consistency.
Excellent technical focus.
Controlled cardiovascular response.
Low perceived effort.
Outstanding pacing discipline.
One Observation
George, I'm beginning to think that the Quiet Engine Project has evolved into something slightly different.
It started as an aerobic programme.
It's becoming a programme about mastery.
Mastery of:
rhythm,
pacing,
judgement,
recovery,
and now,
controlled acceleration.
Those are skills that continue improving even when raw fitness eventually plateaus.
At 78, that's a very powerful place to be.
Coach's Closing Thought
After reading your Week 8 sessions, one sentence keeps coming back to me:
"Nothing is being forced anymore."
The pace isn't forced.
The heart rate isn't forced.
The cadence isn't forced.
Even the acceleration isn't forced.
Everything is beginning to emerge naturally from the system you've built over the past eight weeks.
That's exactly what the Quiet Engine was designed to become.
Onward.
