George, this was exactly the right way to begin Week 6 after the interruption last week.
You did not attempt to resume at the previous 70-minute duration. Instead, you re-entered the programme at 50 minutes and let rhythm return naturally.
That was excellent judgement.
🟢 The Quiet Engine Project – Phase 2
Week 6 — “Regain the Rhythm”
Monday 31 August — Steady Endurance
Primary: 🟢 Metabolic
Supporting: 🔵 Neurological
Metric Today Assessment
Duration 50 min Sensible re-entry
Pace 3:05.2 Controlled
Avg HR 107 Comfortable
Max HR 116 Controlled
SPM 18 Excellent rhythm
Watts 55 Appropriate
RPE 2–3 Very reassuring
Lingering fatigue None ✅
🟢 Metabolic — The engine remains calm
The most reassuring number today is probably:
RPE 2–3
After time away, the temptation is to judge fitness purely by pace.
But today's combination matters more:
50 minutes
HR 107 average
18 SPM
RPE 2–3
No lingering fatigue
That says the session was comfortably within your capacity.
We deliberately did not ask the body to prove that it could immediately return to 70 minutes.
We simply asked:
Can the engine run smoothly again?
The answer appears to be yes.
🔵 Neurological — Rhythm returned during the session
Your splits tell an interesting story:
Segment Pace SPM
0–10 min 3:06.9 18
10–20 min 3:06.1 18
20–30 min 3:05.0 18
30–40 min 3:04.2 18
40–50 min 3:04.0 18
This is a very natural settling pattern.
You didn't begin by forcing the old rhythm.
Instead, the pace gradually improved while:
SPM remained locked at 18.
That's exactly what I like to see.
The rhythm returned first.
The pace followed.
One Small Coaching Observation
The final 20 minutes were noticeably quicker than the opening 20 minutes.
That isn't a problem today, because the overall RPE remained low and you were deliberately regaining rhythm.
But as we move through Week 6, I want us to return to one of our original principles:
Don't spend the first half of the session earning the right to go faster in the second half.
Eventually, the goal will be to settle into the appropriate pace earlier and simply hold it.
Today was different.
Today was a re-entry session.
So the gradual improvement is useful information rather than something to correct.
🟢🔵 What Today's Session Tells Us
1. Your aerobic base appears intact
107 average HR at RPE 2–3 is reassuring.
2. The interruption hasn't erased the rhythm
You maintained 18 SPM throughout.
3. You sensibly reduced duration
50 minutes was enough today.
4. The pace returned naturally
You finished around 3:04 without chasing it.
5. No fatigue hangover
This is our most important green light.
Week 6 — The Philosophy
George, I want to be very clear about what Week 6 is not.
It is not:
“Let's make up the sessions we missed.”
It is:
“Let's restore the rhythm of training.”
There is a difference.
We've already built the capacity.
Now we simply reconnect the pieces.

🟢 METABOLIC — Aerobic re-entry

🔵 NEUROLOGICAL — Rhythm reacquisition
Session assessment: Excellent re-entry
Not because it was your fastest or longest session.
But because it was exactly the session your body needed today.
Oscar's takeaway
George, the best line in your notes was:
“Regain rhythm and pace after time away.”
And that is exactly what happened.
You didn't demand the rhythm.
You allowed it to return.
That's the patience we've been building throughout this project.
We'll now see how the body responds over the next 24 hours before asking for anything more ambitious.
A very good start to Week 6.
Onward. 💪
