I enlisted in the Reserves right after high school, at my parents’ and my older brother’s urging. When I went to college, I was allowed to do two month ACDUTRA at a lifeboat station instead of two weeks in the summer. I liked it and regret not going regular when my enlistment was up and I got out of college. Just before I got out I took the servicewide exam for BM3. My uncle had been a BM in the Coast Guard in WWII submarine hunting in the North Atlantic. I went into tree work, where the line handling the Coast Guard taught me stood me in good stead.
